Thursday 8 February 2018

Students from The Bedford Sixth Form have been named runners-up in Subway® brand’s ‘Design a Sub’ competition, Ababil Yasmin, Ashleigh Chipandire, and Jessica Owusu-Ansah competed against schools and colleges across Anglia to make the shortlist. They won £250.

The annual Subway® challenge asked budding young entrepreneurs from schools and colleges across Hertfordshire, Essex, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Suffolk and Bedfordshire to come up with their own design and marketing campaign for a brand new 6-inch Sub or flatbread.

The team from The Bedford Sixth Form went up against five other shortlisted teams to pitch their marketing and advertising campaign to a panel of Subway® experts on Thursday 1st February at Cambridge University and were just pipped to the post by The King’s (The Cathedral) School in Peterborough, who were crowned overall winner.

Ababil Yasmin said: “We’ve really enjoyed the competition, from start to finish. It was great to put the business skills we have been learning into practise with a brand that we all know and love. It’s been a brilliant learning experience; pitching in front of the panel from the Subway® brand was really nerve wracking, but such great preparation for the future.

Subway® brand entrepreneur, Bob Moodliar, who chaired the judging panel, commented: “Once again, we had an outstanding response to the competition, with some brilliant creative designs and marketing proposals submitted by students from across the region, demonstrating that the entrepreneurial spirit is well and truly alive in Anglia.

“We have been running the Design a Sub challenge for eight years and I am still inspired by the enthusiasm and ingenuity we see from our entrants. Selecting our overall winner was a tough decision, and all the teams demonstrated a good understanding of the brief, did their homework and put together impressive presentations for the judging panel. Congratulations to all our finalists."

As a franchise business, the Subway® brand is run by entrepreneurs who live and work locally in their communities and we are committed to fostering and developing the business skills and employability of young people. The students who enter the Design a Sub competition demonstrate excellent creative and business skills and it is always a privilege to be involved.”

Alex Townsend, Teacher of Business at The Bedford Sixth Form, added: “Our students thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with the Design a Sub competition. It offered them a fantastic opportunity to put the business and marketing skills they have been learning in the classroom into practice in a real-life business environment. What’s more, they have been able to develop important life and employability skills, such as research, communication, presentation and team work, which will hopefully stand them in good stead in the future.
