  • Differential equations

During the course you will have opportunities to present your own ideas and take an active part in finding elegant and interesting solutions to mathematical problems.

AS or A-Level Further Mathematics fits well with almost any combination of subjects and offers wide progression opportunities to university or careers.

Year one course content

You will study the following units:

  • Core Pure Mathematics 1 which includes proof, complex numbers, matrices, further algebra and functions, further calculus and further vectors.
  • Further Mechanics which includes momentum and impluse, work, energy and power, and elastic collisions in one dimension.
  • Decision Mathematics which includes algorithms and graph theory, algorithms on graphs, critical path analysis, and linear programming.

Year two course content

You will study the following units:

  • Core Pure Mathematics 2 which builds on the Core Pure Mathematics AS content and also includes polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations.
  • Further Mechanics which builds on the Further Mechanics AS content and also includes elastic strings and springs and elastic energy, and elastic collisions in two dimensions.
  • Decision Mathematics which builds on the Decision Mathematics AS content.

What does this course prepare me for?

A-Level Further Mathematics is an excellent qualification for continuing the study of Mathematics at University, and can lead to a rewarding career in finance, engineering, economics or a wide range of other industries.

AS or A-Level Further Mathematics fits well with almost any combination of subjects and offers wide progression opportunities to university or careers. If you are considering a degree in mathematics, physics, engineering or computing at a highly competitive university you are strongly advised to study further mathematics to at least AS-Level.

Course support and enrichment

You will be taught in a small group which will be encouraged to meet together at other times during the week in a study group to support each other.

There are also times during the week when you can access staff for support where necessary.

Assessment

The AS course is assessed by two exams at the end of the course and the A-Level course is assessed by four exams at the end of the two years.

The results of each exam are then amalgamated to give an overall result. Both courses encourage independent learning, time management, working in small groups providing support for each other and, of course, a deep love of the subject.

Applications for the academic year 2022/23 are now open. You will only need to make one application and will be asked to select the subjects you wish to study within the application.
