Dragon’s Den deal

Wednesday 24 February 2021

Teenage law student Khai-Rae Owens is pitching her stuffed animal, oddity and curiosity business to a Dragon’s Den panel later this week.

The event coincides with her birthday, and will be an exciting opportunity to talk up her entrepreneurial skills in entomology, articulation and preservation to a group of industry experts.

Khai from Rushden, attends The Bedford Sixth Form, where she is taking A Levels in Law, Sociology and Psychology, and hopes to follow a legal career. But in the meantime, dealing in oddities is her passion.

Her dad owns The Reptile Shop in Castle Road, Bedford, is that where her hobby began?

No, Dad’s baffled by my interest. I just found it fascinating and am self-taught in the skill,” said Khai.

Via her Instagram account The.Mad.Hippie and commercial sites like Etsy and Ebay, Khai sells stuffed animals and ethically sourced curios, to “the massive community” of collectors.

The items include examples of preservation, bone articulation, taxidermy, mummification and more.

The Dragon’s Den style event is part of a festival in East Northants and Wellingborough for Recovery Through Enterprise being staged Feb 22nd - 28th.
