Bedford Sixth Form Students take part in Mock Trial at Bedford Magistrates’ Court

On Thursday 24 April, Law students from The Bedford Sixth Form took part in an exciting and highly educational mock trial at Bedford Magistrates’ Court, competing against students from The Corby Sixth Form. The trial, presided over by Judge Anthony Abrahams, centred around a negligence case involving a road traffic accident, based on a real-life scenario.

Representing the parties on both sides, students argued their case with impressive skill and professionalism. Judge Abrahams ultimately ruled in favour of the claimant—represented by students from The Bedford Sixth Form.

The day began with a guided tour of the courtrooms and holding cells, providing students with a broader understanding of how the legal system operates in practice.

Student Dominic Wynne-Williams (acting as the claimant): “Being part of the mooting experience was everything I’d hoped for and more. Not only did I get to deliver a dramatic witness statement on the stand in front of a full courtroom, but I also gained invaluable insight into building a case, applying relevant case law, statutes, and legal concepts. We even got a tour of Bedford Courthouse! Going up against Corby Sixth Form was a tough challenge, but I was thrilled when the judge ruled in our favour. A huge thank you to Judge Abrahams for his feedback on our technique and arguments, and to everyone involved in organising the event.”

Law Teachers Dee’anna Petrucci and Sabba Anjum: “We are so proud of the students- it was a fantastic experience! They displayed excellent court room etiquette and demonstrated a strong understanding of negligence throughout. It gave them valuable first-hand experience of how the court system works, inspiring them to pursue their aspirations in law and law-related fields.”

Student Amal Ahamed Mohamed Safrask (acting as the factual counsel for the claimant): “The mock trial allowed us to put our understanding of the law into practice and we gained valuable insights into this profession. Thanks to the kind guidance of our experienced teachers, we all felt as if we were practising barristers presenting a real case. We were also grateful that Judge Abrahams shared his expertise with us, guiding and advising us on procedural matters, enhancing our practical experience.”

This mock trial provided not only a taste of real courtroom procedures but also a platform for students to explore future career aspirations in Law. Events like these showcase The Bedford Sixth Form’s commitment to providing enriching, real-world experiences that prepare students for their futures.
