Navigating University Clearing: A Guide from The Bedford Sixth Form

Bedford Sixth Form students

A-Level Results Day is a rollercoaster, full of nerves, excitement, and sometimes, surprises. If things didn’t quite go to plan, don’t panic.

Clearing could be the perfect opportunity to find a university place that’s right for you.

At The Bedford Sixth Form, we know how overwhelming the Clearing process can feel, especially when you’re already dealing with the emotions of Results Day. That’s why we’ve put together this simple guide to help you understand what Clearing is, how it works, and how you can make the most of it.

What is Clearing?

Clearing is a way for universities to fill any remaining places on their courses and a way for you to secure a university spot if:

  • You didn’t receive any offers
  • You didn’t meet the conditions of your firm or insurance offers
  • You declined your offers or changed your mind
  • You’re applying for the first time after 30 June

It runs from July to October, but for most students, the action happens right around A-Level Results Day.

 Is Clearing Right for You?

You might want to consider Clearing if:

  • Your results were lower than expected and you didn’t get into your chosen university
  • You’ve changed your mind about what or where you want to study
  • You didn’t apply through UCAS earlier in the year

Whatever your reason, you’re not alone. Thousands of students find a university place through Clearing every year, many even end up at universities they hadn’t considered before but absolutely love.

How to Use Clearing – Step by Step
  1. Check UCAS Hub
Log in to your UCAS account. If you’re eligible for Clearing, it’ll say “You are in Clearing” or “Clearing has started”.
  2. Browse Available Courses
Use the UCAS Clearing search tool to see which universities still have spaces. You can filter by subject, location, and more.
  3. Contact Universities Directly
Call the admissions team of the universities you’re interested in. Have your UCAS ID, A-Level results, and personal statement ready.
  4. Get an Offer
If a university is interested, they may make you a verbal offer. Make sure to get this in writing or by email.
  5. Add Your Clearing Choice in UCAS
Once you’ve decided, you can accept an offer by adding the course as your Clearing choice in your UCAS Hub.
Top Tips from The Bedford Sixth Form Team
  • Be prepared: Have a list of universities and courses you’d be happy with before Results Day.
  • Stay calm: Clearing moves quickly, but that doesn’t mean you have to rush into a decision. Take time to think.
  • Ask for help: Our team is here to support you. On Results Day, staff will be available for guidance, whether you’re exploring options or making those all-important calls.
Remember – This is YOUR Journey

Clearing doesn’t mean failure. In fact, for many students, it’s the start of something even better. Whether you end up on your original path or find a new one, what matters is finding the right fit for you.
