Setting sail with great career prospects

Wednesday 19 February 2020

Kate Travers chose to come to The Bedford Sixth Form because it offered the option of a coursework based Health & Social Care Extended Diploma.

More convenient to reach by public transport than the Stewartby location of Wootton School’s sixth form, the town centre Bedford Sixth Form offers a great learning environment for young adults.

With her Diploma and an A Level in Sociology, Kate is hoping to join the Royal Navy as an officer and work in a warfare control room. Her dream would be to be on board a Type 45 Destroyer operating 21st Century sonar equipment.

Kate comes from a family with a history in the military. The women were mostly in uniform as nurses, but today’s modern services have opened up many more career choices.

Kate has been in uniform since the age of ten when she joined St John Ambulance where she rose to become a Leading Cadet until turning 18 in February 2020 and is now an adult member and able to progress in Advanced First Aid.

“You can now attend events like Twickenham and O2” said Kate who through years of voluntary services has taken up some exciting opportunities.

“I have already attended Luton Town FC, Bedford Park Concerts and the London Marathon. It’s very rewarding to be able to help so many people.”

Kate has also travelled abroad with St John Ambulance. She visited South Africa as part of the England and Northern Ireland team where different regions of the global organisation competed for First Aid medals.

Another honour has been Kate being chosen as one of the Bedfordshire Lord-Lieutenant’s uniformed representations which involves attending official events such as Remembrance Day and Civic Services. The Lord-Lieutenant is the Queen’s official representative in the county. It is a permanent position held by Helen Nellis who is keen to showcase the outstanding work of young people in Bedfordshire.
